Ora Dessie Andereck1,2

F, #7496, b. 18 February 1878, d. 1 November 1933
FatherIsaac H. Andereck3,4,2 b. 22 Jul 1844, d. 24 Jun 1918
MotherSophia Elizabeth Warren4,2 b. 21 Oct 1853, d. 9 Sep 1883
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Ora, daughter of Isaac H. Andereck and Sophia Elizabeth Warren, was born on 18 February 1878 in Burket, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Her death certificate says 18 Feb 1880 but that clearly doesn't work with the 1880 census.5,6,1
Census1880Ora appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Seward Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Isaac H. Andereck and Sophia Elizabeth Warren, as 2 yo daughter Dessie Andrake.2
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Lloyd Estel Study on 4 April 1896 at Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were
Floyd Leslie Study (1896-1944, m. Hazel Amanda Hire 1918), Edna Study (1898- ), and Charles E Study (1903-1929, living w/ grandparents Orpheus & Louisa Study in Kosciusko in 1910).
Lloyd's wife is listed as Mary Study on his death certificate of 1906. Informant was Mary Study. Did the name Dessie get mis-heard as Mary or did Lloyd divorce Dessie and remarry?.
The 1900 census confirms married 4 years with 2 born and 2 living.7,8
Census1900*Ora and Lloyd appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 23 June 1900, as 23 yo farm laborer Estel & 21 yo wife Dessie Study. Their children 3 yo Floyd & 1 yo Edna Study were listed as living with them.9
Marriage*Her second marriage was to George W. Kern Jr. on 10 November 1909 at Warsaw, Kosciusko Co., Indiana.5
Census1910*Ora and George appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Burket, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 26 April 1910, as 32 yo blacksmith George Jr & 32 yo wife Ora Kern. George's parents 74 yo George & 74 yo Margaret Kern were listed as living with them as father & mother.10
Marriage*Her third marriage was to Wilbur J. Mcgonagle on 7 March 1918 at Allen Co., Indiana. A notice of their marriage license was in The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette on 09 Mar 1918, p. 6, col. 6.11
Census1920*Ora and Wilbur appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, enumerated 2 January 1920, as 33 yo railroad shop laborer Wilbur & 39 yo wife Ora Mcgonagle. Two lodgers are living with them, one of whom is Ora's previous husband 42 yo railroad shop blacksmith George W Kern!12
Census1930Ora and Wilbur appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, enumerated 11 April 1930, as 40 yo wire foundry wire drawer Wilbur J & 51 yo wife Ora B Mcgonagle. One lodger was living with them, Ora's previous husband 52 yo steam railroad blacksmith George W Kern (indexed Keen.)13
Death*Ora died on 1 November 1933 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, at age 55, of heart block with Stokes-Adams syndrome. A bit bizarre. Her headstone says simply 1931 but her death certificate, in several places, says 1933. Her son Floyd was informant on her death certificte.6,1
Burial*She was buried on 3 November 1933 at Palestine Cemetery in Palestine, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.6,1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 30 March 2024 re Ora Dessie Andereck's marriage records are puzzling.
1) She m1 Lloyd Estel Study in 1896 and had three children - Floyd, Edna, and Charles E Study. Floyd and Edna are in the 1900 census. Charles E Study (1903-1929) is living with his grandparents Orpheus & Louisa Study in Kosciusko County in the 1910 census. I've been unable to find Floyd and Edna has apparently died.
2) Lloyd's death certificate shows his wife and informant as Mary Study. Did Lloyd divorce Ora after the 1900 census and remarry before he passed in 1906? Or is this just sloppy listening by whoever filled out the death certificate?
3) Ora m2 George W Kern in 1909. Her name in the marriage record is Ora Study as expected. In the 1910 census she and George live in Burket, but she's showing only this as her 1st marriage and no children born!
4) Ora m3 Wilbur J Mcgonagle in 1918. In the marriage record she's called Ora Study, not Ora Kern. But her father's surname is correctly Andereck here and in her death certificate when her name is Mrs. Ora Dessie McGonagle. So there's no doubt the Ora who married Mcgonagle is this woman.
5) In the 1920 census things get really weird. Ora and her m3 husband Wilbur are in Ft. Wayne. Two roomers live with them, one of whom is George W Kern, Ora's previous husband!
6) Same deal in 1930 - Wilbur & Ora with one lodger this time, but again Ora's m2 52 yo blacksmith George W Keen.9,10
