Birth*Henry, son of Samuel E. Means and Harriet Palmer, was born in 1838 in Kentucky.3
Census1840Henry is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Samuel E. Means, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.4
Census1850Henry appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Samuel E. Means and Harriet Palmer, as 12 yo Henry C Means.1
Census1860Henry appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Samuel E. Means and Harriet Palmer, as 22 yo Henry Means.3
Census1880*Henry appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Schoolhouse Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, as 40 yo laborer Hery Means in the household of 72 yo Sarah Lewis. Henry's parents live two houses away.5
ResearchNote*Research Note of 4 August 2019 re multiple Find A Grave possibilities. Find A Grave lists seven Henry C Means, two of whom could be our man, but apparently are not. First is Pvt. Henry Clay Means (1839-1862), the other Henry Clemons Means (1839-1859). The birthyears of the others are way off base. FSTrees lists quite a few Civil War records but they are inconclusive in separating our Henry from others. I find no likely candidates in either the 1870 or 1880 censuses. Perhaps he really is the Pvt. Henry above, who died during the War, and Find A Grave simply has the wrong parents.

Census1850Esther appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, Samuel E. Means and Harriet Palmer, as 9 yo Esther A Means.1
Census1860Esther appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, Samuel E. Means and Harriet Palmer, as 18 yo Esther A Means.3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 4 August 2019 re FamilySearch. Where FS get off adding the middle name Fatima, citing the 1850 census, is beyond me. Her name is clearly just Esther Means in that enumeration. MeansKYDescendants says she married R R Hopkins in 1877 in Christian County. FS does have a marriage record for these names. In the 1880 census we find Russell R & Esther Hepkins but Esther's age of 29 is off by 10 years. I find nothing in 1900. Find A Grave is no help.

Census1860Frances appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, Samuel E. Means and Harriet Palmer, as 17 yo Frances E Means.3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 6 August 2019 re another Mary Frances Means? The Mary Frances "Fannie" Means who married James Perry Braden is not our Frances. MeansKYDescendants says she was daughter of Samuel Allison Means and Sarah Ann Phaup. MKD calls this woman Frances Palmer Means. This is no doubt based on the 1850 census where someone has written in a name across Fannie's entry. Some researchers read it as 'Palmer' and ascribe it to Fannie. FamilySearch reads it as 'Fatima' and puts it with her sister Esther enumerated above Frances.

Birth*Harriett, daughter of James Alexander Torian and Cornelia J. Means, was born on 7 May 1862 in Christian Co., Kentucky. She claims June 1862 in the 1900 census.5,1,2
Census1870Harriett appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, James Alexander Torian and Cornelia J. Means, as 7 yo Harriet Torian.2
Marriage*She married James A. Ward on 26 May 1878 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. Bond dated 25 May. Married 20 years with 8 born & 7 living in 1900 census. I've got 8 born at that point but all 8 are still living. In the 1910 they show married 30 years with 11 born and 10 living.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Luther Day (1881-1949, m. Fnu Lnu who d. bef. 1910), James "Jim" (1885-a1946, of Mississippi 1947), Wilbur William (1886-1968, of Hopkinsville 1947), Joseph Graves (1889-1967, m. Eva Myra Luttrell, of Hopkinsville 1947), Harry (1891-1991, m. Mary Ethel Wilson, of Hopkinsville 1947), Clyde Elwood (1893-1975, of Hopkinsville 1947), Ruby B (1895-1981, m. Silas Virgil Sisk, of Dawson Springs 1947), George Bryant (1898-1921), Jess (c1901-c1958, of Hopkinsville 1947), and Earl (c1902- , of Hopkinsville 1947) Ward.
The residences above are per Harriett's obit. The 1910 census is bizarre, listing an 8 yo son Sane(?) Ward. Since Earl was listed separately this must be Jess, though the ages of these two flip-flop in 1920. All these children except Jim and Earl have Find A Grave memorials.6,7,8,9
Census1880*Harriett and James appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Schoolhouse Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 24 yo farmer J A & 17 yo wife Hattie Ward. JA's 19 yo brother Joseph G Ward was listed as living with them.10
Census1900Harriett and James appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 June 1900, as 44 yo farmer James [A?] & 37 yo wife Harriet E Ward, |Their children 14 yo James, 12 yo Wilbur, 10 yo Joseph, 7 yo Harry, 6 yo Clyde, 4 yo daughter Ruby, and 1 yo Bryant Ward were listed as living with them.11
Census1910Harriett and James appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 5, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 28 April 1910, as 54 yo farmer James A & 47 yo wife Harrette Ward. Their children 29 yo widower Luther D, 18 yo Harry, 16 yo Clyde E, 14 yo Rubie B, 12 yo George, 8 yo (indexed as Sane, may be Sanel), and 6 yo Earl Ward were listed as living with them.12
Census1920Harriett and James appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Herndon, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 8 May 1920, as 55 yo farmer James & 52 yo wife Harriett Ward. Their children 25 yo Clyde, 18 yo Earl, and 16 yo son Jessie Ward were listed as living with them.13
Census1930Harriett and James appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 April 1930, as 73 yo farmer James A & 67 yo wife Hattie E Ward. Their son 38 yo Clyde Ward was listed as living with them.14
Census1940*Harriett appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 29 April 1940, as 78 yo widow Hariet Ward. Her 45 yo son Clyde Ward was listed as living with her.15
Death*Harriett died on 16 January 1947 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, at age 84. Son Joe Ward was the informant on her death certificate. FSTrees inexplicably gives death date of 1935.5,8,1

Birth*John, son of James Alexander Torian and Cornelia J. Means, was born on 13 March 1867 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Jack's death certificate, informant his brother Jacob Gray Torian, shows Jack's parents as James A Torian and Cornelia Gray. Odd to say the least re his mother. Perhaps Gray was her middle name where other records just list the letter J. The death cert has his birthyear as 1876, not 1867.1,2,3

Census1930He and Jesse Edna Wood appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Western State Hospital, Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 15 April 1930, as 63 yo Attendant Jack R Tarian and 59 yo Matron Edna Torian, living onsite as boarders.8

My preliminary research suggests their children were Cecil Allen (1896-1953, m. Bernice Velma Howard), Phyllis Claire (1898-1906), Myna Lillian (1900-1991, m. B J Wall), and Jean Gray (1902-1974, m. His mother's claim of 3 & 3 in 1900 doesn't jive with this birth year, but 5 & 3 in 1910 does.4,1

Birth*Jesse, son of James Alexander Torian and Cornelia J. Means, was born on 19 November 1873 in Christian Co., Kentucky. His death certificate claims his parents were Jim Torian and Lucy Means. Jim and Lucy (Proffit, not Means) didn't marry until 6 years after Jesse was born. Informant was Cleon Torian.3,4,2
Census1880Jesse appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Schoolhouse Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, James Alexander Torian and Lucy P. Proffit, as 6 yo son Jessie Torian.2
Marriage*He married Laura D. Smith on 25 December 1898 in Graves Co., Kentucky. License dated 24th. Married 11 years with 2 born and 2 living in the 1910 census. My preliminary research suggests their children were Clelon L (1899-1973, perhaps m1 Mabel Ruth Murphy, m2 Lucy L Allen, m3 Jessie A Summersville) and Merritt J (1904-1921) Torian. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials 42289110 & 42289110 respectively. FSTrees shows their first son as Cleveland but the census record strongly supports Clelon or Cleon.5,3

James A. Ward1

M, #9441, b. 7 September 1855, d. 7 September 1938
Last Edited20 Sep 2022
Birth*James was born on 7 September 1855 in Christian Co., Kentucky, s/o James Ward & Susan Torian.2,3
Marriage*He married Harriett Elizabeth Torian, daughter of James Alexander Torian and Cornelia J. Means, on 26 May 1878 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
All these children except Jim and Earl have Find A Grave memorials.4,5,1,3
Census1880*James and Harriett appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Schoolhouse Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 24 yo farmer J A & 17 yo wife Hattie Ward. JA's 19 yo brother Joseph G Ward was listed as living with them.6
Census1900James and Harriett appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 June 1900, as 44 yo farmer James [A?] & 37 yo wife Harriet E Ward, |Their children 14 yo James, 12 yo Wilbur, 10 yo Joseph, 7 yo Harry, 6 yo Clyde, 4 yo daughter Ruby, and 1 yo Bryant Ward were listed as living with them.7
Census1910James and Harriett appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 5, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 28 April 1910, as 54 yo farmer James A & 47 yo wife Harrette Ward. Their children 29 yo widower Luther D, 18 yo Harry, 16 yo Clyde E, 14 yo Rubie B, 12 yo George, 8 yo (indexed as Sane, may be Sanel), and 6 yo Earl Ward were listed as living with them.8
Census1920James and Harriett appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Herndon, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 8 May 1920, as 55 yo farmer James & 52 yo wife Harriett Ward. Their children 25 yo Clyde, 18 yo Earl, and 16 yo son Jessie Ward were listed as living with them.9
Census1930James and Harriett appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 April 1930, as 73 yo farmer James A & 67 yo wife Hattie E Ward. Their son 38 yo Clyde Ward was listed as living with them.10

Mamie C. West1

F, #9445, b. 26 January 1873, d. 13 November 1943
Last Edited23 Sep 2022
Birth*Mamie was born on 26 January 1873 in Virginia. Husband Jake's Find A Grave bio gives her middle initial as C with date range 1872-1873. Mamie's own memorial has it as G with date shown here. FSTrees gives her full name as Mamie Curry West with date of 26 Jan 1872, but none of the cited sources actually support these values. Birthstate is consistently Virginia until 1930 when it says West Virginia.2,3
Marriage*She married Jacob Gray "Jake" Torian, son of James Alexander Torian and Cornelia J. Means, on 25 January 1894 at home of W. G. West in Christian Co., Kentucky. The 1900 shows married 6 years with 3 born & 3 living. The 1910 says 15 with 5 & 3. My preliminary research suggests their children were Cecil Allen (1896-1953, m. His mother's claim of 3 & 3 in 1900 doesn't jive with this birth year, but 5 & 3 in 1910 does.4,1

Charles Kennedy1

M, #9450, b. circa 1840
Last Edited9 Aug 2019
Birth*Charles was born circa 1840 in Kentucky.2
Marriage*He married Louisa Obedience "Lue" Torian, daughter of Drury Torian and Martha Crump, between 1867 and 1868. Married 32 years with 7 born and 5 living in the 1900 census. My preliminary research suggests their children were Barbara Ella "Mollie" (1868-1952, m. John Thomas Arterburn Sr), Charles W (c1870- ), James W (c1870- ), Minnie L (c1873- ), George W (c1876- ), Emma E (1879-1880), and John W (c1882- ) Kennedy. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorial and death record for Barbara, otherwise zilch. The 1880 rules state that if a person died before 1 Jun 1880 then they are to be left off the enumeration. From this I conclude Emma had died.3,1
Census1870*Charles and Louisa appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wallonia Pct., Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 20 September 1870, as 29 yo farmer Charles & 22 yo Louisa O Kenney. Their 1 yo daughter Barbarella Kenney was listed as living with them.2
Census1880Charles and Louisa appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dist. 106, Denton Co., Texas, enumerated 11 June 1880, as 40 yo farmer Chas & 32 yo wife Louisa O Lanady. Their children 11 yo Barbara E, 9 yo Chas W, 9 yo Jas W, 6 yo Minnie L, and 3 yo George W Lanady were listed as living with them. On the line below George there's an entry for 0.8 yo Emma E Lanady. The line is marked out and the 'daughter' field is blank.4
Census1900Charles and Louisa appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Parker Co., Texas, enumerated 13 June 1900, as 61 yo salesman Charles & 52 yo wife Louisa O Kenady. Their children 23 yo George W and 17 yo John W Kenady were listed as living with them. Next door is their 31 yo daughter Barbara Ella as Mollie E Arterburn, along with her husband James and four children - Rosa, Lillie, Oskar and Freddie Arterburn.3
